The radiant floor is an increasingly demanded air conditioning system. It is a system that is installed under the floor of the room that we want to heat or cool.

Is an alternative against the traditional method of heating by radiators, being today one of the most efficient market systems by achieving lower energy consumption and a greater degree of comfort.

How does water-based underfloor heating work?

It is a heating system that operates through a network of hidden pipes installed beneath the floor, through which water supplied by a boiler or aerothermal heat pump circulates. Depending on the water temperature, the system can heat or cool the desired space.

To heat the room, the water temperature is raised to between 30 and 40°C. To cool the environment, cold water at approximately 14–17°C circulates through the system, absorbing excess heat.

Is water-based underfloor heating a good option?

To help you decide whether underfloor heating is suitable for you, below we explain the main advantages and disadvantages of this system.

Advantages

  • Invisible system: everything is hidden beneath the floor, saving space and allowing full freedom in room design.
  • Higher thermal comfort, as heat or cooling is distributed evenly from the ground up.
  • Energy-efficient system, providing energy savings of up to 30% compared to traditional radiator systems.
  • Provides both heating and cooling, making it suitable for year-round use.
  • More environmentally friendly, thanks to reduced energy consumption and lower emissions.
  • Cleaner system, reducing dust accumulation and allergens, making it ideal for allergy sufferers.

Disadvantages

  • Higher initial installation cost compared to other heating systems.
  • More complex installation that requires specialized professionals.
  • Limited choice of flooring materials, with ceramic or porcelain being the most suitable.
  • High thermal inertia: the system takes longer to heat up or cool down, but retains temperature longer.
  • Possible condensation issues in very humid areas, which can be solved with condensation detection systems.
